Synopsis: After a kind-hearted street urchin comes across a magical lamp which stores a genie, he gets thrown in the life of royalty and is opposed by the evil vizier of the Sultan.

Pros: Entering into the movie theater I was a little skeptical. For starters, the original Aladdin is one of the best movies ever made. This movie was most likely not going to live up to the greatness of the first movie. Another thing that I was worried about was the directing of this film. The new Aladdin movie was directed by Guy Ritchie who normally directs action movies such as King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Sherlock Holmes. How would he be able to direct a Disney film? These were the thoughts going through my head while walking into the movie theater. I didn’t know how wrong I was. Guy Ritchie does an excellent job with the casting. The characters were extremely likable and charming. Will Smith was hilarious as Genie, Aladdin was still the same kind-hearted street rat and Jafar was still as menacing as ever. The soundtrack, in my opinion, was even better than the original soundtrack. I could feel literal chills while listening to Naomi Scott performing her solo. The visuals were highly appealing and overall was an extremely pleasant experience especially on the big screen.

Cons: Although the movie was extremely funny at some parts, I felt like many lines were extremely cringe worthy and very dull. I felt like a child wrote the script at many times. Another problem I had with the movie was it felt very rushed. It seemed like Guy Ritchie was automatically assuming everyone knew what happened so he brushed over many parts of the movie that needed much more explaining. Finally, although some of the modified scenes were a nice addition to the film, there were a lot of parts that fell a little flat for me. While I appreciate Guy’s effort to make the film a little more fresh, I think he forgot the fact that the original Aladdin was a masterpiece on its own and by changing too many scenes, it kind of ruins the magic which the first one brought to the table.

Star Rating: 8/10

Final Thoughts: In the modern Aladdin, Guy Ritchie does a pretty great job adding a fresh spin to an old story with a likable cast, an excellent score, and beautiful visuals. Although there were some plot holes and extremely cringy lines delivered, Aladdin is an enjoyable film to watch with the entire film.
