Aquman Comic-Con Poster

Movie Name: Aquaman                MPAA Rating: PG-13                Release Date: December 21, 2018 Synopsis: Aquaman is the sixth films in the DCEU, AKA: The DC Extended Universe. It's about Aquaman (Jason Mamoa) discovering his Atlantean roots to save the surface world from his half-brother Orm/ Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson) Considering how bad the first 4 DCEU movies were I walked into the theater with my expectations pretty low. I mean sure Wonder Woman was good but maybe that was a fluke. Two and a half hours later I came back with a satisfied feeling. This movie really shocked me. The visual effects were amazing, the storyline was pretty good (although there were a couple of plot holes) and the acting was overall good.

Pros: The main trait the movie has going for it  was the visual effects. They. Are. Amazing! In past DC movies, Zack Snyder's style of directing gave the DCEU a very dark vibe, but James Wan completely flipped that vibe on its head. He gave such a colorful, vibrant, feel to Atlantis which really blended well with the film. The whole time you feel like you've teleported into the world of Atlantis. Another positive thing I can say about this movie is Jason Mamoa. Jason Mamoa as Aquaman is one of the better casting decisions DC has made. Jason Mamoa is the comic relief and the hero of the film. He delivers funny quips, yet at the same time can become the hero known as Aquaman. The final thing that I enjoyed about the film is the diversity of directing James Wan brought to the table. Like I said before, he changed the vibes the film gave of. At the end of the film he also did something Marvel has done with their movies, and something DC did with Justice League. That's right, a post-credit scene! Although it's not something major, I do appreciate Wan's different style of directing and change it brings to the DCEU.

Cons: One of the cons about this movie are the plot holes. There are many minor, but bothersome ones that appear in the movies (most of them will be spoken about in the spoiler review). For example, the film would say one thing about the Atlantean technology, and then then Aquaman would do something with the technology that completely contradicts what the film said previously. Maybe it was the fact that the crew was so focused on the visual effects that they didn't spend to much time on the script or maybe just some  slip-ups, I don't know.

Star Rating: This movie gets a 8.5 out of 10 stars for me

Final Thoughts: Aquaman was an extremely fun experience and was outstanding in terms of VFX. 2019-2020 is gonna be a BIG year for DC with the release of movies such as Shazam, WW84, Flash, etc. I think if those movies are directed and shot like Aquaman, DC may have a shot of redemption.
