Pros: Going into this movie I wasn't expecting much. I was hoping for big, creative monster fights between two goliaths while preparing myself for almost no plot. I can confidently say my expectations were met. Most people probably are just here for a giant monkey to fight a giant radioactive lizard and they will get exactly what they want. There are two major fights that occur between the titular characters and they are very well executed. Whether it's King Kong beating Godzilla with an axe or Godzilla drowning Kong in the ocean, the fights that occur are creative and are also filled with occasional tension. Adam Wingard did a great job directing fight scenes that require Godzilla and Kong to use their environment in order to fight the other Titan. A great example of this is when Kong uses a skyscraper as a distraction while coming up behind the lizard in order to strangle him. The visuals are beautiful and it is a shame I couldn't enjoy them on the big screen or in IMAX. The final battle in Hong Kong is breathtaking and give off really cool dystopian-tech vibes. Finally, the sound design in the movie is really well done. When there are two goliaths duking it out, as an audience member, I expect to feel the punches thrown. The sound design really encapsulated the strength of the two characters which immersed me in the experience even further.
Cons: As mentioned before, I was expecting there to really be no plot and that expectation was met. The biggest flaw of the Monsterverse trilogy is the lack of depth in the human characters. Ironically, the characters with the least amount of depth are normally the ones with who we spend the most time. Luckily, in Godzilla vs Kong, the spotlight is more focused on the two titans but I still found myself checking my phone whenever Millie Bobby Brown's character came on the screen. The villain is so forgetful and really has no motive other than wanting to be powerful. I honestly don't remember his name or what he looked like and I just watched the movie. Additionally, all realism and logic have to be left behind when watching this movie. If you question the logistics of how Godzilla and King Kong are able to stand on a boat without it sinking, then you won't have as much fun with the movie as you should. Finally, in terms of story, there are numerous plot points that don't connect with one another leading to multiple plot holes and things that don't make much sense.
Star Rating: 7/10
Final Thoughts: Ultimately, Godzilla vs Kong delivered exactly what I wanted and was expecting. Don't expect an intricate plot, interesting characters, or any real logic/science in the movie and you'll have a lot of fun with two titans beating the crap out of each other.
