Introduction: Gotham is, in my opinion, one of the best shows ever made. It's the origins of the Dark Knight, AKA: Batman. Instead of the show centering around the Dark Knight though, it  circles around Jim Gordon, the detective who solves the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents. As a big DC fan, I was super excited to hear about a show circling around Batman as a kid, and all the villans that made Batman who he is today. As soon as I heard about this show, I immediately opened up the computer and started watching it on Netflix. Forty minutes went by and I finished the first episode. I closed the computer, and probably spent a solid fifteen minutes sitting on the chair, thinking about what I just watched. The show is so dark! It was not what I expected at all. I was very conflicted. On one hand, the show is really good, but on the other hand, it is super dark. I decided to give it a chance and watch it. After about a week of binging, eating, and contemplating, the first season ended. I WAS SHOCKED! This show is a work of art. I was satisfied as a DC fan, and as a casual viewer.

Pros: The first complement I would give is to the story line. The directors and producers of the show did an extremely good job keeping what happens in the show faithful to the comics. Most shows and movies that are based off of DC Comics, often stray away from the comics to "make the story more interesting". Gotham doesn't do that at all. Another great thing about the show is how the audience feels for both the heroes AND villains of the storyline.  Normally in TV shows, the audience cheers when the heroes achieve their goal and the villain loses but in this case, the audience sees that the "antagonist" might have some hero like qualities, while the "protagonist" has some villain like qualities. This show demonstrates how not everything is black and white. The final good thing I have to say about this show is how it hooks you from beginning to end. Gotham is definitely not one of those shows that has a strong beginning but a weak ending. It delivers from the beginning to the end, and the creators of the show do a really good job integrating character arc. This way, the audience can see the characters progress into their favorite super heroes and super villains.

Cons: Although there are a lot of good things about this show, not everything is perfect. One con that I just have to put out there is how dark this show gets. Me personally, I have nothing against dark shows and concepts, but sometimes, even by my standards, this show crosses the line. There are multiple examples of, torture, gruesome murders, and very dark concepts to grasp. I feel like Gotham should restrain on how dark they make the show. Another con I have to say about the show is how they rush things a little bit. Change is not a bad thing in TV shows, yet Gotham adds to much change, way to fast for the viewers to process. It seems as though as soon as a villain dies, a new villain immediately introduces his/herself. As soon as there is a death of a major character in the show, in the next episode they just move on as if nothing happened. I feel like this show would be much better if it let the major plot points/ twists sink in a little bit more. This way, the audience has more time to process what happens and it will make a bigger impact.

Star Review: 9 out of 10 stars

Final Thoughts: Gotham is a piece of art. It's fun to watch, especially for fans of DC and Batman. The show is constantly an exhilarating roller coaster and there's barely a dull moment. Although the show  is sometimes very dark, it has its comedic and relatable moments and shows how not everything is black and white, and there's no such thing as someone being purely evil or purely good. I highly recommend this show.
