Pros: Right out of the gate with the opening scene I could tell this was going to be a unique cinematic experience. Going into the movie, I knew virtually nothing about the musical it was based on other than the fact that Lin Manuel Miranda was involved with it. This made the characters and plot all new to me which is good as I could review them without comparing them to the source material. Both the characters and the plot are very well written and compelling. As the audience watches Usnavi struggle to achieve his dreams, you feel for him and are rooting for him every step of the way. The acting is also spot on from Anthony Ramos as the protagonist, Usnavi, to the most minor side characters. Although In the Heights meets with the basic requirements of a good movie, easily the best thing about the film was the music. Every single musical number executed with flair, grandiosity, and filled with energy that made me want to get up and dance in the middle of the theater. Even the most emotional and poignant songs resonated with the audience. The slick lyrics in some of the rap-heavy musical numbers were very well written as well. The entire setting of New York allows for some fantastic set pieces. The one that comes to mind immediately is a musical number performed entirely in a pool and it is simply Oscar-worthy.
Cons: The only real gripe I have with this movie is the misuse of its long run-time. When any movie is two and a half hours, it allows for the film to explore storylines and plot points to its completion. Yet, there were a few plot points and storylines that felt a little shallow and incomplete. Specifically, there is a secondary storyline following a romantic relationship between two characters that I never really got invested in so when they actually got together, the pay-off was never as rewarding for me as it should have been.
Star Rating: 9/10
Final Thoughts: Overall, In the Heights brings a cinematic experience that should really be viewed in a movie theater. Filled with fantastic performances, immersive musical numbers, and summer vibes that will sweep you off your feet, In the Heights makes me feel excited for the rest of the summer blockbuster movies.
